The best time to visit New Mexico largely depends on what you want to experience, as the state offers diverse attractions year-round.

Spring (March to May) has mild temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds. It's the perfect time for outdoor activities like hiking in White Sands National Park or exploring Carlsbad Caverns. The Albuquerque area is especially beautiful with its blossoming landscapes.

Summer (June to August) is great for mountain escapes and cultural festivals. While the lower elevations can get hot, the mountains (like Taos and Santa Fe) offer cooler temperatures. Summer is also a prime time for festivals, including the Santa Fe Opera season and the Taos Pueblo Powwow.

Autumn (September to November) has stunning foliage and iconic events like the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October which is a must-see, with hundreds of hot air balloons filling the sky. The weather is pleasant, and the aspens in the mountains turn golden.

Winter (December to February) Skiing and unique holiday traditions. Ski resorts like Taos Ski Valley and Angel Fire are popular for winter sports. New Mexico also has a rich holiday culture, with luminarias (traditional lanterns) lighting up towns like Santa Fe and Albuquerque.

Albuquerque

Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city, and it blends culture, history, and high-desert drama. Cruise classic Route 66, that drives through the centre of town and get some great photos at the authentic Route 66 signs, diners, and coffee shops. Wander through Old Town’s adobe streets, galleries, and churches and if you’re lucky enough you may see a delightful Mariachi band playing and flamenco dancers performing. Discover living Native American heritage at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Centre and ride the Sandia Peak Tramway for sweeping city and mountain views. The popular television drama Breaking Bad was shot in Albuquerque and you can do a self-guided or guided tour to its various filming locations. Every October, the International Balloon Fiesta takes place - an unforgettable celebration of colour, community, and adventure.

Santa Fe

Just one hour north-east of Albuquerque, lies Santa Fe, the utterly charming capital city of New Mexico. Reached by hire car or by train, Santa Fe is truly magical and is filled with history and timeless beauty. Centred around its lively Plaza, you can stroll along the pavements where many of the locals sell their beautifully handmade crafts and jewellery or enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by. Walk to over 100 world-class art galleries along Canyon Road, or trace frontier history along the legendary 19th Century Santa Fe Trail - the important commercial highway that connected St Louis and Santa Fe. The city is filled with stunning architecture including the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi, chapels, and interesting museums.

Las Cruces

Three hours south of Albuquerque is Las Cruces, a town which feels like you’ve gone back in time due to its rich history, wild west culture and beautiful preserved adobe buildings. Visit nearby quaint Mesilla, where the notorious outlaw and gunman ‘Billy the Kid’ used to hang out and see its beautiful and tranquil plaza and cute shops. The town and the surrounding region are famous for Hatch Green Chiles, a cornerstone of New Mexican cuisine and you can enjoy chili inspired dishes at La Posta de Mesilla, one of the oldest and most popular restaurants in town. Just beyond the city, a must visit is to White Sands National Park which dazzles with its miles upon miles of shimming white sand dunes that create one of the most unique landscapes in the world. Enjoy hiking or dune sledding by day and spectacular sunsets and exceptional stargazing by night.

Taos

Offering year-round outdoor adventure and rich history and heritage, Taos is located around 2 hours and 30 minutes from Albuquerque. Outdoor enthusiasts will love Taos and its stunning Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the deep Rio Grande Gorge where you can enjoy skiing in the winter months and hiking and river rafting in the summer months. Culturally rich, Taos is also home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Taos Pueblo, an ancient Native American community which was inhabited for over 1000 years by Taos and Pueblo tribes. See the multi-storey adobe buildings and learn about the interesting traditions of the tribes on a guided tour.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

An ideal stopover when travelling to New Mexico from Texas, Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a breathtaking underground world home to over 120 caves. Lying directly under the Chihuahuan Desert, visitors can descend into the caves to the vast limestone chambers filled with unique and delicate stalactites including the ‘Big Room’, which is the largest single cave chamber in North America and the King’s Palace which has the most stalactites and stalagmites in the cave system. Choose to explore the caves on hiking trail just over a mile-long, and if visiting from late Spring to October visitors can see thousands of Brazilian free-tailed bats emerging from the cave at dusk.
